  • Distributor Modifications: If you contact Affordable Fuel Injection, they will tell you that they can sell you a modified HEI distributor that will be usable for computer timing control. You don’t need to spend that kind of money. For probably less than $20 and an hour of your time, you can modify your STOCK distributor to trigger a GM ignition.
  • If there is no HEI at the spark plug but it is strong at the coil, suspect a bad plug wire or boot. If there is no HEI at the coil, suspect that the coil is defective. HEI should be tested (carefully) with the engine running.
  • After the third coil replacement, the "pickup coils" tested bad on the DVM and appeared to delaminate. Replaced the entire distributor after the third coil with a basic MSD "street fire" plain HEI. (No MSD box.) If tracked, I've replaced the carbon tracked components. (NOTE: all rotors have had "metal screws" not nylon.
